One of the concerns when using a ventless fireplace is carbon monoxide. You need to understand how ventless fireplaces work in order to have a better understanding of the processes that are involved with ventless fireplaces.

Carbon monoxide is a by-product of any burning process of any fuel. Ventless fireplaces are not an exception to this.
Since the ventless fireplace is ventless, there is no way for the by-products of combustion to be vented to the outside. This can cause some concern if the ventless fireplace is left on for more than 4 hours, or the manufacturers recommended time.
Another by-product of ventless fireplaces is water vapor. Water vapor is released when the heat from the flame touches the cooler air of the room. If you are using a ventless fireplace in a small area, you could possibly notice a buildup of humidity in that area.
With a greater concern about carbon monoxide safety, some manufacturers are putting a built-in carbon monoxide detector into the ventless fireplace. This should never be relied upon in the place of having your own carbon monoxide detector in your own home.
With any gas fired appliance, you really should have a good carbon monoxide detector in your home. Test it regularly, and follow the manufacturers directions for ventless fireplace safety as related to their specific product.
