One of the drawbacks of some ventless fireplaces is that they don’t sound real. You know, the popping sounds and crackling of the wood that a traditional fireplace would offer is gone.

Ventless fireplaces and especially ventless gel fireplaces now can crackle and even emit an odor like a faint wood burning smell. While some people might not want the crackles or odors, a lot of people do want them as it makes the ventless fireplace seem more realistic.
It is harder to get the crackling noise and odors from a ventless gas fireplace, however most manufacturers of ventless gel fireplaces offer a variety of gel fuel cannisters for odors and crackling noises.
